INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION


Kerava Upper Secondary School is actively involved in international cooperation. The aim is to offer students knowledge and experiences of different cultures. It is also important that students have a good opportunity to make international connections for the future. Every school year several students of Kerava Upper Secondary School also travel abroad in order to study as exchange students in different parts of the world and at the same time foreign students study in Kerava. These exchange programs offer students opportunities to make friends with other students from other cultures.

The school is involved in the following projects

China Project
In cooperation with Järvenpää and Hyrylä Upper Secondary Schools and Shenzhen Middle School in China, Kerava Upper Secondary School is involved in the China Project. The objective of the project is to encourage students to become familiar with Chinese culture and to stimulate them to acquire an insight into Chinese language. In addition, the aim is to help students to learn more about Finland’s economic relations with China. The project involves visits between the Finnish and Chinese schools.

Cern Project
The project involves cooperation with Järvenpää, Hyrylä and Kerava Upper Secondary Schools. The objective of the project is to teach students about particle physics and to introduce them to the function of particle accelerators. In the project students visit the science centre in Cern.

History Course in Rome
The students taking part in the history course on classical antiquity have an opportunity to visit Rome the Eternal City and take a closer view of the historical sights of the city.

Biology and Sports Course in Poland
In the physical education and environmental biology course it is possible for the students to learn about the surroundings in northern Poland and discuss environmental issues. In the course the students also take part in sports lessons.

Exchange Project with Gymnasium Bammental in Germany
In May 2009 a group of German students with their biology and English teacher from Gymnasium Bammental visited Kerava Upper Secondary School for the first time. They studied water ecology and English in biology and English lessons together with Finnish students. Correspondingly, a group of Finnish students together with their teachers visited Bammental in autumn 2009. In this project students have an opportunity to study biology and English in international groups consisting of German and Finnish students.

Exchange Project with Gymnasium Stephaneum in Aschersleben Germany
Cooperation with Kerava’s new twin city Aschersleben started at the beginning of 2010. The exchange project between Gymnasium Stephaneum and Kerava Upper Secondary School is one part of the new cooperation between Aschersleben and Kerava. This project involves visits between the two schools during which students work on different themes. In May 2011 a group of students from Aschersleben with their teachers visited Kerava for the first time. The students worked on “Stadt-Um-Bau-project” in which the idea is to design new meeting places for young people in the city centre. The same kind of work will be done in Germany when Finnish students visit their new friends’ school.
